A more energy-efficient pump system for Tata Steel

We delivered a new system comprising three slurry pumps for Tata Steel’s oxygen steelmaking plant. We handled the design, supply, installation and commissioning. The result: annual savings of 518,214 kWh and a reduction of 191,221 kg in CO₂ emissions.

The challenge: pumps at the end of their service life

The existing VP pumps had reached the end of their service life and were showing signs of material fatigue. This increased the risk of unplanned downtime, higher maintenance costs and production losses.

Repair or overhaul offered insufficient prospects for long-term use. We therefore investigated which replacement would best suit the installation, considering reliability, energy consumption and maintenance.

A new system with three slurry pumps

Following our assessment, we designed and supplied a system comprising three Warman Q-series slurry pumps. Our specialists carried out the installation and commissioning at Tata Steel.

Additional foundations were installed to reduce vibration, adapting the new installation to conditions at the steelworks.

Energy savings and lower maintenance costs

The new pump system saves Tata Steel 518,214 kWh annually and reduces CO₂ emissions by 191,221 kg per year. Savings on maintenance, energy consumption and CO₂ emissions give the investment a payback period of 1.5 years.

This project combines the replacement of ageing pumps with reduced energy consumption and lower operating and maintenance costs.
