Conveyor bridge refurbishment involving over 60 tonnes of steel

Tata Steel commissioned us to refurbish two critical conveyor bridges. These bridges transport coke to the screening plant at Coke Gas Plant 2 and are essential to the production process. Wear and ageing meant the existing structures no longer met current requirements. The challenge was that the bridges could not be taken out of service simultaneously, requiring precise planning and carefully phased work.

Preparation

The project took 14 months, from quotation and preparation through to installation. After carefully measuring the structures, developing the designs and preparing the schedules, we began the work. The installation phase ultimately took eight months.

Dismantling and installation

Work began with the careful removal of existing structural components, including floor plates, conveyor supports, stairs, handrails, platforms and belt take-up towers. As the bridges could not be out of service simultaneously, we worked in tightly controlled phases of four weeks per bridge. Temporary structures allowed production to continue uninterrupted throughout the work.

After dismantling, we installed the new steel structures. In total, the project involved over 60 tonnes of steel, including 1,050 m² of new floor plates and more than ten tonnes of stairs, handrails, platforms and caged ladders. Both belt take-up towers were also completely replaced.

Installation was carried out in collaboration with Smulders (Iemants), supported by our own specialists. All components were installed on site, precisely aligned and given protective coatings for a long, safe service life.

The result

After 14 months of preparation, planning and execution, we handed over two fully refurbished conveyor bridges. Both structures had been completely renewed with new steelwork and professionally applied protective coatings, ready for years of safe and reliable use.

Close coordination, carefully designed temporary structures and collaboration with our partners kept the project on schedule without disrupting production. A project we are proud of and a valuable contribution to Tata Steel’s sustainability plans.
