How often should staircases, handrails and platforms be inspected?

Staircases, handrails and platforms must be inspected at least once a year. Where there is intensive use, exposure to corrosive conditions, or after modifications to the structure, more frequent inspections may be necessary. An interim inspection is also advisable in the event of loose grating, damaged platform sections or aged handrails.

What happens if defects are found during an inspection?
